Alice Walker (1944-) is one of the most influential writers in the contemporary American literary world. Her masterpiece “Purple” has been praised by many readers and critics since its publication in 1982, winning three top prizes representing the highest honor of American literature. The study of the novel has long been enduring, especially about the feminism and racism in the novel. However, there are few works that read the novel from Foucault’s discourse right theory. This article, starting from Foucault’s discourse right, explores how women in “Purple” dispel the power of men’s discourse by analyzing women’s discourse rights in the novel.
