Sometimes an industry also needs to look in the mirror and learn about it through the layman’s eyes. In particular, PC makers need to make such introspection to face the growing gap between what they think should and prepare to be produced and what tomorrow’s users want to buy. PC manufacturers know how to configure a new generation of microprocessor chips into the system to meet the user’s upgrade requirements. Processor speed is the main topic in buying and selling: Even after the machine is sold, the model name is still troubling buyers, leaving them feeling the hardware they have purchased lags behind. On my workbench stood a set of Dell 433DEs (33MHz 486) and a set of HP 5/133 (133MHz Pentiums), whose notable trademarks warn me that I would be outdated in technology fashion without annual product upgrades.
