As a powerful tool to quantitatively describe complex nonlinear phenomena in nature, fractal geometry is applied to the study of the southern South China Sea fault system. Fractal distribution fractal dimension values are calculated by the box method. The results show that this method is feasible. The fractal dimension of fracture distribution can effectively describe the spatial distribution of faults. The southern South China Sea fault system has good statistical self-similarity within 25 ~ 250km of scale interval, the fractal dimension value of all faults is 1.6601, the north-east fault is 1.3875 and the north-west fault is 1.2693. According to the fractal contour of fractures, along the axis of expansion in the southwestern basin, the faults on both sides are symmetrically distributed; the NE and NW directions are spatially complementary, which reflects that during the development of the two faults Mutual restraint. Based on the tectonic evolution of the South China Sea and the distribution of oil and gas pools in the southern South China Sea, the relationship between the fractal features and the tectonic evolution and fractal characteristics of the South China Sea and the distribution of oil and gas pools is discussed.
