Foreword Autopsy data have long been used to identify aircraft design flaws and preventive strategies to improve occupant survival in the event of a crash. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of victim injury and their tentative tendencies at the national level in aviation-related fatal accidents. Methods Data were obtained from the National Institutes of Health on the certificate of death associated with an aviation accident in 1980 (1543 cases) and in 1990 (1011 cases).
