明清小说,尤其是笔记小说中,蛇的形象随处可见。蛇的诱惑主要体现在两方面:一方面,蛇被视作女性的化身。与龙阴阳兼备不同,蛇之性属阴。以蛇比女人,同为阴柔之物,且外表美艳、姿态婀娜。美女蛇的故事将蛇与女子的联系固化,基本结构为遇蛇——遇道士——治蛇,美女蛇形象集诱惑与危险于一体。另一方面,蛇代表着被禁忌的欲望。因为对蛇的生殖崇拜,使其隐含了禁忌的意义。“淫莫过蛇”实际不仅是针对蛇品性的判定,也是对于龙、鱼等与蛇有类似属性之物的判定。蛇的形象是人对于恶的外在性的预设,把内在的恶外化,是人对纵欲、背离秩序而产生的羞耻感的情感补偿。
