《赵氏孤儿》是中国戏曲史上与《窦娥冤》齐名的悲剧代表作,但是在戏曲史类作品中,作为悲剧代表作,很少列专题介绍。究其原因,应该是由于两种版本的差异造成的。《赵氏孤儿》有《元刊杂剧三十种》本和明人编刊的《元曲选》、《古今名剧合选》本两种版本。两种版本在曲词、思想风格、冲突性质和结局处理上均有很大的不同,而这些不同正造成了两种版本悲剧性的差异。关于悲剧的概念,长久以来一直引用西方的观点,而很少考虑中国戏曲的独特性。在此,引用借鉴赵孟毅东方悲剧“余韵美”的观点,肯定明刊本的悲剧性,最终认定,《赵氏孤儿》元明两刊本均具有强烈的悲剧色彩,“既列之于世界大悲剧中,亦无愧色也。”
