Calcitonin (CT) is a 32-amino acid peptide hormone that is synthesized in the normal body by thyroid C cells. Some studies have demonstrated that certain small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients can produce CT in the tumor tissue, and the patient’s serum and urine also have elevated CT levels. CT has also been suggested as an indicator of the efficacy of lung cancer monitoring. To determine the relationship between ectopic calcitonin production and non-allocating calcitonin secretion in SCLC patients, two polyclonal antisera (Ab3b and Ab4) were used in this study for radioimmunoassay (RIA) for 86 lung cancer patients and controls.
