Peyres Dalton was one of the few British women invited to work in China in the 1950s. The recent discovery of her correspondence and documents in recent years provided us with a unique opportunity to learn about the life of Beijing in the eyes of foreign women (she had been employed by a foreign language agency for four years). This article explores her motivation behind making such a dramatic change in her environment and places her experience in context. During the Spanish Civil War in 1937, as a qualified nurse, she volunteered to join the International Column and work on the front line. In the wake of the defeat of the Spanish Republic in 1939, she sadly sought the hope of many of her colleagues in the medical team in China and believed that a real socialist society could be established in China. She arrived in Beijing in 1954, and a few months later she married Eric Ardenney, a former member of the International Brigade, and gave birth to a son in 1955. Her nuanced observations were expressed in the letters she wrote to her sister. Her unique insight into the environment around her is daily, and her collection of other documents and reports shows her sympathy for the communist political system and how Chinese officials have been tested.
