Imaging spectrometers will play an important role in a series of future unmanned exploration of the planet. The scientific purpose of spectral imaging technology is to understand the composition of the planet’s structure by measuring the intensity and distribution of spectral properties of visible and infrared radiation reflected and emitted by planetary surface matter. As part of the NASA-sponsored “Planetary Detection Instrument Identification and Development Plan,” the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is currently developing a standard imaging spectrometer suitable for a variety of planetary exploration missions. Based on the NIMS used in the Galileo exploration of Jupiter, the USA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed Type I Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (VIMS). This instrument has been initially selected by NASA for use in the mission to approve the upcoming Mars Observer spacecraft to be implemented.
