陈嘉庚(1874-1961)福建同安县集美社(现厦门市集美镇)人。他青年时代背井离乡到南洋经商,开拓橡胶种植业,发展橡胶工业和海运业,终于成为一位有成就的实业家。陈嘉庚热爱祖国,关心家乡,重视教育,倾资助学,先后创办了集美学村、厦门大学等举世闻名的学府。抗日战争爆发后,陈嘉庚先生四处奔走,团结南洋广大华侨,筹赈救亡,到处募捐,并组织大批华侨回国抗战。陈嘉庚先生是我国近代史上蜚声全球的华侨领袖,是为祖国富强、民族振兴而坚持奋斗的无数志士仁人中的杰出代表。
