According to the Giles model of two-level approximation, the optimal erbium-doped fiber length for a given pump power is calculated. The influence of the length of erbium-doped fiber on the shape of the gain spectrum of the amplifier was experimentally studied. The high performance amplifier with high gain, low noise figure and broadband flat gain spectrum was obtained by further optimizing the erbium-doped fiber length.
