作为世界第一高峰的珠穆朗玛峰,以其雄伟挺拔、极具挑战性吸引着世界各国、各地区的登山探险者。尽管登山家们在珠穆朗玛峰南北两侧开辟了许多攀登路线,但攀登难度仍然很大。由中国登山家们在北侧开辟的东北山脊攀登路线成为通向顶峰的重要路线,其中位于海拔约8700米的第二台阶是一个高差10多米的绝壁。1975年中国登山队再次攀登珠峰时,在此架设了长约6米的金属梯,从此许多登山者借助此梯实现了登上第一高峰的梦想。此前的1960年我国登山家王富洲、贡布、屈银华首登珠峰时是靠搭人梯攀越此险段
