Objective To understand the cognitive function of school children with very low birth weight. Methods The Das-Naglieri cognitive assessment system was used to evaluate the cognitive function of 30 very low birth weight infants (after correction of gestational age) and 50 normal full-term infants of the same age as the control group. Results Very low birth weight children in the planning scale sub-total, while the sex processing scale sub-total, following the sum of time processing scale, attention scale sub-total and DN-CAS cognitive assessment of the total scale were lower than normal Full-term children, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusions Healthy, viable, very low birth weight children have normal cognitive ability early in school, but lag significantly behind normal full-term children of the same age, primarily in terms of the information coding process and the ability to relate attention to the process of coding the information.
