The view of “meaningful form” put forward by Clive Bell exerted a significant influence on the theory of modern art. However, in accepting this view, the academic circles over-emphasized the conclusion itself and ignored Bell’s specific argument process. In fact, through the detailed argumentation of western art history before the twentieth century, Bell expressed his hope of containing the eternal value of the artwork, and advocated the ceaselessness of the artworks with Cezanne as a model combining the art and the truth. However, with the development of western modern art, the universal truth in works of art and the eternal concept of absolute meaning are constantly being dissolved in modern art characterized by rebel tradition and seeking change.
