从《柏子》英译本结尾的改变谈起——翻译社会学视角

本文探讨的是沈从文小说最早的英译文本——1936年出版的斯诺(Edgar Snow)翻译的短篇小说《柏子》。研究发现,斯诺删掉原文的结尾,代之以自创的结尾,而沈从文小说的结尾决定着小说的整体结构、布局和风格。译者的改写在形式上改变了原作田园诗般抒情的文体风格,在内容上使原作中处于“蒙昧人”状态的“柏子们”在译作中变成意识到社会不公的“清醒者”。根据Casanova社会学理论及Berman翻译批评理论的分析框架,本文从翻译项目、译者立场以及翻译评价诸方面入手分析讨论译文之所以如此的成因。斯诺的译文体现了时代背景、译者惯习以及源语/目标语地位等多方力量的抗衡。 This essay explores the earliest English translation of Shen Congwen ’s novels, Bozi, a short novel translated by Edgar Snow in 1936. The study found that Snow deleted the end of the original, replaced by their own end, while the end of Shen Congwen novels determines the overall structure, layout and style of the novel. The rewriting of the translator changed the style of idyllic lyrical style in the original form, and made the contents of the “Bozi ” who are in a state of “ignorant ” in their original works to become aware of social unfairness in translation. According to the analytical framework of Casanova sociological theory and Berman’s translation criticism theory, this article analyzes and discusses the reasons for the translation from the aspects of translation project, translator’s position and translation evaluation.
