Australian universities are partnering with educational institutions in Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea to run Australian university courses in both regions. The author, funded by the Australian Research Council, conducts an investigation of such international cooperation in education with the topic of “The Implementation of Australian Distance Education in Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea: A Study of the Internationalization of Education.” The survey, which began in 1999 and ended in July 2002, conducted a case-by-case survey of Australian universities in Hong Kong using interviews, observation, and document collection and analysis. This article takes the Hong Kong education market with fierce international competition as the background. The professional courses co-sponsored by Australian educational institutions and Hong Kong educational institutions are the content of the study, the views and understandings of Hong Kong learners in studying Australian courses locally, and the overseas joint ventures Course evaluation. The paper reports on the findings of the study in three aspects: the reasons why Hong Kong students choose Australian courses; the students ’opinions about local teachers in Australia and Hong Kong; and the students’ understanding of and adaptation to Australian curricula, pedagogy and evaluation methods.
