后现代戏剧和当代装置艺术在内容和形式上有着千丝万缕的共通性。首先,两者都试图提供一个能使观众置身其中,感同身受的三度空间。观众的介入和参与是后现代戏剧和当代装置艺术不可分割的一部分。两者都是观众个人情感和生活经验的延伸和扩展。其次,后现代戏剧和当代装置艺术所创造的体验环境或艺术空间,是用来包容观众,并促使甚至迫使观众在已界定的空间内,由被动欣赏转换为主动感受。这种主动感受要求观众除了积极思维和充分介入外,还要尽可能的使用感觉器官:除了触觉、视觉、嗅觉、听觉、味觉,甚至第六感。有时,为了激活观众的情感和思维,或是为了颠覆观众的习惯性思维,一些刺激感官的因素会经过夸张、强化或异化而使人久久难忘。第三,后现代戏剧和当代装置艺术都不受艺术种类的限制,它自由并毫不拘束地综合使用着最新的雕塑、绘画、音乐、建筑、诗歌、戏剧、散文、电视、电影、录像、录音、摄影等任何能够使用的艺术观念和技术手段。可以说两者都是一种非常开放的综合艺术。
