As China develops and its international status ascends, China becomes more and more an important market in the eyes of foreign companies. When the 2008 Olympic Games is held in Beijing, the total value of the footwear market in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan will surpass that of Japan, reaching 2.5 billion U.S. dollars, becoming the second largest footwear market in the world after the United States. “It will be a huge battlefield,” said Tor Petersen, a Shanghai-based sports marketing company manager in Shanghai. “If you have not got a firm foothold on this battlefield by 2004, you’re definitely going to be eliminated.”
