She was paralyzed after landing head-first during a practice vault at the Goodwill Games in New York in 1998 when she was only 17 years old. People around the world have witnessed her accident on TV and sympathized with her for her tragedy, but they have been more moved by her confident winsome smile and her optimistic determination to fight for her future. After her injury, Sang Lan said, “Though I can no longer compete for a gym champion, I will do my best to be a champion in my life.”
