《山雨》刚一出版,即应声得到其时文艺界的热烈欢迎。不过与发表其时文艺界同行的赞誉相比,在随后文学史叙述中《山雨》却有些落寞。以至于在作家逝世以后,时而会有研究者为这部小说没有得到应有的重视而叫屈。其实小说随后的命运大概在当时已有迹可寻,当根源于它与其时兴起的“革命文学”叙事模式的差异和距离,而这集中体现在它所塑造的陈庄长(陈宜斋)这个人物形象身上。通过对“乡绅”形象的分析,展现时代巨变下“乡绅”阶层的变异。
