Objectives: To test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Child Social Preference Scale. METHODS: Both samples were from preschool children aged 3 to 6 years from Shanghai Public Kindergarten (sample 1: N = 350, Mage = 4.72, SD = 0.58; sample 2: N = 129, Mage = 4.40, SD = 0.58). In sample 1, the mother of the young child completed the Chinese version of the Child Social Preference Scale and the Child Behavior Questionnaire. After 9 months, the teacher completed the assessment of the children’s social subscale in the Child Behavior Teacher Rating Scale. In Sample 2, the child mother finished the Chinese version of the child Social preference scale, 9 months later, the teacher completed the child behavior teacher rating scale children’s emotional problems, internalization problems and aggressive behavior assessment. Results: The factor analysis showed that the two-factor model of children’s social preference scale fits well. The scale includes shyness (7 items, factor loading of 0.59-0.73) and social apathy (4 items, factor loading of 0.59-0.76) Two dimensions. The scale also has higher internal consistency (0.75 ~ 0.89) and retest reliability (0.70 ~ 0.86). After controlling for children’s social indifference, children’s shyness tended to positively predict children’s internalization problems and externalized emotions (β = 0.20, P <0.05; β = 0.21, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Children’s Social Preference Scale has good reliability and validity. During the pre-school period, children who are shy and indifferent tend to show different social adaptation.
