Microbubbles are gas-containing microspheres that, due to their lower acoustic impedance than soft tissue and blood, can be injected into the body as an acoustic contrast medium to increase the acoustic differences between the tissues and thus enhance the ability of ultrasound-assisted diagnosis of the disease.
