1985年3月20日,方显廷先生(1903～1985)在瑞士日内瓦寓所悄然离世,终年82岁。方显廷是谁?对于改革开放以来新生代的中国学人来说恐怕是闻所未闻,无论是在《中国大百科全书》,还是在《简明不列颠百科全书》里面都查不到他的名字。而这位在1949年以后逐渐从中国学术界的视野中消失的人物,对于从事中国近代经济史专业研究的人来说,却并不陌生。费正清在《伟大的中国革命》一书中提及近百位现代中国人的名字,其中属于严格意义上的经济学家只有方显廷与何廉两位。可以说,不提方显廷,就无法讲述中国近代经济史研究。
March 20, 1985, Mr. Fang Xianting (1903 ~ 1985) retreat in Geneva, Switzerland, quietly home, at the age of 82 years. Who is Fang Xianting? For the Cenozoic Chinese scholars since the reform and opening up, I am afraid that they are unheard of. No one can find his name in the Encyclopedia of China or in the Concise Encyclopaedia of Britannica. However, this figure, which gradually disappeared from the Chinese academic field after 1949, is no stranger to those engaged in the study of the professional economics of modern China. In his book The Great Chinese Revolution, Fei Zhengqing mentioned the names of nearly a hundred modern Chinese people, of whom only Fang Xianting and He Lian belong to the strict sense of economists. It can be said that without mentioning Fang-ting Ting, we can not tell the history of China’s economic history.
