Objective To investigate the relationship between calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and the pathogenesis of migraine. Methods Radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to determine the level of CGRP in elbow venous blood, external jugular vein and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in migraine attacks and compared with cerebrovascular patients and normal subjects. Results The levels of CGRP in elbow venous blood, external jugular vein and CSF of migraine patients were significantly higher than those of patients with cerebrovascular disease and normal controls (P <0.01). The content of CGRP in the external jugular vein during migraine attack was significantly higher than that in the elbow vein (P <0.01). Conclusion The onset of migraine is closely related to the change of content of vascular active substance CGRP.
