Objective To explore the possible associations between the four types of family diet and the healthy dietary behaviors of students. Methods A total of 24 684 students aged 13 to 22 in urban areas of seven prefecture-level cities in Liaoning Province were surveyed. The questionnaire was used to investigate the students’ reported rates of eating vegetables, fruits, eating breakfast and drinking milk. Results There was a significant difference in the prevalence of healthy eating behaviors among the five families (P <0.05), both in boys and girls; the reported rate of stable families was higher and the reported rate of unstable families was lower Among them, the largest families reported the highest rates; the reported rate of eating and drinking fruit in reorganized families was lower. The rate of eating vegetables and eating breakfasts is reported by the boys as being lower for every generation and lower for single-parent girls. Conclusion All aspects of healthy diet behavior and family type are related. Three types of unstable families need more attention.
