1860年門得雷业夫(Mendeleeff)週期表問世後,遂开元素分類法的新頁。後经各國學者相继研究及修正,週期表已日臻完善。在平面的圖表中,若就形式而分類,有矩形表(包括长表与短表),塔形表,梯形表及螺旋形表等;若就週期性而分類,大別可分为長表與短表。長表將每一週期的元素排成單列;短表則将每一長週期的元素排成双列。週期表對化學的貢獻極大,能使化学变为一門簡易的科學而便於學習。故週期表为学習化學的鑰
