Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in man, and epidemiological study has shown the close relationship between the incidence of AF and aging.1 Although the effects of aging on atrial electrophysiology have been investigated in humans and animal models,2-9 the electrophysiological changes that make the atria of aged individuals more susceptible to AF than those of adults remain poorly understood.
