Human milk is a very effective hemostatic agent. The factors that increase blood clotting in human milk are related to thromboplastin, which is ineffective at 100°C, but can maintain its full effect for a longer time if stored below 100°C. This factor has nothing to do with thrombin, and thrombin loses its effect at 56 degrees Celsius. Only human milk can promote blood coagulation. Other animal milks do not have this effect. Colostrum does not have the property of hemostasis; the greatest hemostasis is achieved after four weeks and remains constant for many months thereafter.
