In many American Western novels and movies, the scoundrels who are the leaders of many other gunmen that are moral evil want to achieve their own will. Those people shoot any other person without thinking too much about others’ feeling; in another words, they do with a low morality.However.On the other hand, there is a person who has the same ability as a gunman,or even more excellent as a gunman, but he own the high morality and he never do something that go against his conscience. Then the conflict between virtues and vices become sharp. And in this novel, the conflict between virtues and vices is the conflict between shane and Luke Fletcher.
In this novel, the excellent gunman—Shane, comes to a western town and lives with a local family that are immigrants to there. And the immigrants strive for the rangeland with the “boss” of the village who raises many cattle. The latter wants to strive the immigrants away. With the worse condition,Shane stands on the immigrants’ hand, but before he tries to keep his place without for any of them. And Luke Fletcher employs a professional gunman to fight with Shane. As for the employed professional gunman,he must do what his boss asked for Luke Fletcher pays for him.It symbolizes that the professional gunman doesn’t own the moral right to choose whether do it or not any more.Because whether he has any view about justice or not,he must do as his “boss” says. Therefore,in gunman’s world, they can follow their own view on morality and do what they prefer; on the contrary, they may shoot people for the remuneration without regarding the morality in mind. The choose of the two is the choose between Shane and the employed professional gunman.
There is another plot that embodies the virtues of Shane and the vices of the other gunman. One afternoon,as Shane rides a horse to the local store to buy new clothes, after finishing it,Shane goes into the drinking store to have a drink where many people are talking and drinking. When Shane asks a cup of drink,a man come to him and says that Shane is a farmer who am not suitable to enjoy there. Then he shouts to Shane and wants to have a fight with Shane. At the beginning period,Shane doesn’t argue with him even though the man shouts at him, even scolds him.Shane just does what he wants and the boss tends to urge the man not to do that. However, what the man does becomes more serious, which sets fire to Shane.Shane begins to fight with him.As we can see,in fact,Shane doesn’t want to fight with him even though he suffers much abuse to him.But on the other hand, the drinking man tries his best to enrage Shane. His vices come into ground obviously. And Shane wants to keep his morality but the “society” can’t tolerant his moral criterion. So Shane has to do something to react the man’s action. So the contradiction between virtue and vices became outstanding in this plot. At the end of this novel,Shane shoots Luke Fletcher and the employed professional gunman. He wins. After finishing it,he leaves the small town by himself. We all know that the vices--Luke Fletcher take control of the virtues---Shane.With the arriving of Shane,he changed the original condition. From the description of this plot, the author not only gives an excellent gunman to the immigrants, but also symbolizes that the weak must win at last.It proves that those people who have the right or hight morality, they will win at last. That is to say,the vices will be taken control by the virtues.
From the above analysis,we can see that the conflict between virtues and vices is another theme of this novel or film. And to its practical meaning,we can conclude that no matter how strong a man is,he can’t suppress his fellows.Even he can’t use those devious ways to make trouble to his fellows. It is a truth that the virtues will take control of the vices, which we can find in Bible.
