Sea levels have risen faster in the last century than at any other time in nearly 3,000 years, according to a new study. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research 1 the study. Scientists there say they believe sea levels will increase 2 up to four feet in the next 100 years. Sea levels rise when greenhouse gas is sent out, which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料), 3 the earth and cause glaciers (冰川) and sea ice to become water. This adds more water to the oceans.
The study asks 4 to follow the Paris Agreement in order to stop the expected rise as much as possible in sea levels. This agreement was created at 5 United Nations climate summit (峰会) held in Paris this past November. The goal of the plan is to have countries give 6 less greenhouse gas. Anders Levermann believes this plan can help but not totally stop sea levels from rising. “With all the greenhouse gases we already gave off, we 7 stop the seas from rising altogether,” he says. “But we can try our 8 to limit the speed of the rise by ending the use of fossil fuels.”
