Hemingway’s short story The Cat in the Rain has always been known for its subtlety and obscurity. The seemingly insignificant short space contains rich connotations, fully reflecting the charm of the Iceberg Principle. Based on the novel’s text, this article deeply analyzes the symbolic meaning of the works and questions the rationality of some explanations in the past critics. This paper argues that the scene description of the novel conveys the main context, which implies the living conditions of the characters and their thoughts and feelings. About cats mentioned in the works many times, its symbolic connotation is not single, the change of meaning reflects the mentality of the characters. In short, the main thrust of the work is to describe the disillusionment and nihilism of men and women after the war. In this novel, Hemingway has once again made good use of his elliptical art.
