Objective To understand the current status and service capabilities of ophthalmology in Yunnan Province as of 2007. Design cross-sectional survey. Research object 165 medical institutions in Yunnan Province. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted on the status of ophthalmology in the medical institutions in Yunnan Province from October to December in 2007 by using the unified questionnaire for the status of ophthalmic institutions. Collect and analyze the questionnaire results. The main indicators of the number of medical staff, annual surgery, outpatient volume, the number of cataract surgery doctors can complete independently. Results There were 735 ophthalmologists in 165 medical institutions participating in the survey, 392 were able to independently complete cataract surgery and 771 were eye care workers. Of the 16 prefectures and cities in the province, Zhaotong has only 7 ophthalmologists per million population, compared with 32 in Kunming. In 2006, all the medical institutions completed a total of 58,346 kinds of ophthalmological operations, including 23,833 cases of cataract. There are 27 medical institutions that have not yet started cataract surgery. Only 29 (17.6%) medical institutions at all levels had better ophthalmic devices and 6 (3.6%) did not have any ophthalmic devices. Conclusion There are great differences in ophthalmology among medical institutions of different levels and in different regions in Yunnan Province. Uneven distribution of human resources and low work efficiency require further resource integration and optimal utilization to meet the needs of the masses for ophthalmic medical services.
