“Pamela” is a famous English epistolary novel in the 18th century, which exerted a tremendous influence on the development of English novels and the entire European literature. The greatest feature of this novel is that it is mainly composed of the protagonist Pamela’s discourse --- epistle --- and the hero becomes one of her characters. Pamela’s language expresses strong equality and resistance and is a tool she resists power. Mr. B, the male protagonist, had attempted to force her into submission by controlling her language, eventually becoming impressed by her language because her language was also the best tool she could use to shape her own image. Author Richardson’s portrayal of Pamela has a bold and unique reality. Instead of showing the heroine as a perfect man, he showed her the character of her age, gender, identity and character through her correspondence. His excellent use of the literary genre of epistles makes this novel quite intriguing
