The papal envoys of the Holy See in 1705 were an important event in the relations between China and the West in the reign of Emperor Kangxi. The clashes between Donohue and Kangxi around the “dispute of Chinese ceremonies” show the escalation of the “adaptation strategy” of Jesuits’ preaching since the arrival of Ricci in China and the adherence of the Holy See to the controversy on the original course. Excavating Chinese archives and materials, the author made a detailed account of the entire process of envoys in China, especially the exchanges with the Qing court during Duoluo’s stay in Beijing. Kang Xi ordered the missionaries in China to issue the “leader’s” policy and its actual situation Detailed comments. The Holy See’s insistence on the fundamentalist position eventually forced the Qing government to take the “No Education” initiative.
