Objective To investigate the changes of alveolar bone height in experimental type 1 diabetic rats. Methods Twelve SPF male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, with 6 rats in each group. The model rats with type 1 diabetes were established by intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared streptozotocin (STZ) (60 mg / kg) in the experimental group. The control rats were injected with the corresponding volume of citrate buffer. After 8 weeks, all the rats were sacrificed and the upper and lower jaws were separated. The height of the alveolar bone in the first, second and third molars of the maxilla and mandible was observed by stereomicroscope. The changes of alveolar bone height were analyzed. Results There was no obvious alveolar bone destruction in the control group. In the experimental group, obvious alveolar bone destruction was observed, the destruction was horizontal, and the first, second and third molar alveolar bone were destroyed, compared with the control group The difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusion Alveolar bone destruction was observed in experimental type 1 diabetic rats and showed a slow horizontal absorption.
