Bell is the only novel written by the American Confessionate poet Silvia Plass. For a long time, many scholars interpret the image of the hero, Esther Greenwood, from the perspective of feminism. They argue that the novel records Este’s journey from self-escapism to madness and reconstruction of true self. However, whether Este really crazy but did not receive due attention. The article will analyze the reasons for Estel’s mental breakdown from the suppression of patriarchal society and the lack of female role models, revealing that her madness is only a label given by patriarchal culture and not a true reflection of her mental state. This so-called “madness” is a form of revolt against gender politics that is awakening by American women in the 1950s and is a “reckless” intellectual “madness.”
