South Africa’s immigrant writer, 2007 Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing’s two novels, “Our Friend Judith,” and “Elderly Woman and Cat,” all complain about the patriarchal society that binds women and animals (cats) Freedom, even forcing them to gain freedom at the expense of their lives. By portraying the interdependence of cats and humans in the narrative of comedy, the author expresses her ecologic values.
