Carus, a comparative philosopher in the United States from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and a religious scholar actively promoting dialogue among religions, translated “Tao Te Ching” with Suzuki, a Japanese Zen master of his youth, . This paper argues that Carus’s translation abandons the moral tradition of interpretation and introduces a set of terminology which is devoted to the tradition of Christian devotions into translation. Almost the Book of Moral Scriptures becomes a popular Christian spirit at the time Cultivation manuals with similar ideas and methods. His translation and interpretation opened the tradition of 20th century Western scholars to study the relationship between “moral classics” and religious experience.
