Jane Austen, an outstanding British woman writer, completed six world famous classics in her short life. Austin through her heroine expressed her dissatisfaction with gender differences and her pursuit of equality and freedom. However, the women in her essay eventually find it hard to escape the traditional social norms that determine the inferior position of women. Marriage is a good example. For a well-educated woman who does not have many dowries, there is no alternative but to marry a rich man for the rest of her life. The article attempts to expose the social roles of British women at that time by analyzing Jane Austen’s personal experience and the social reality reflected by the women in her works.
