在英语中我们经常会看到这样的句子:Don’t play ostrich.He is a Solomon.句中的 ostrich 和 Solomon 跟汉语“他是个阿 Q”,“那家伙是只老狐狸”中的“阿 Q”和“老狐狸”一样,有自己约定俗成的借代意义,说话者无须解释,听话者心领神会。这便是修辞学上的“词义引伸”现象。词义引仲现象在英语中用得很广,比较常见的有 Solomon(指代智慧),Hercules(指代大力士),fire(指代热情、欲望),wolf(指代残忍、贪婪),等等。经常被引伸词义的英语词类
