English-speaking ladies and gentlemen, did you ever wonder if you were using French words? COUP D’ETAT, LAILLEY-FAIRE, and BOUTIQUE are all common French words in English. An analysis of the origins of the 5,000 most common words in English can illustrate the significant impact of French. Of the 1,000 most-used words, 12% are from French and about 46% of the remaining 4000 words are from French. The high frequency of grammatical expressions is one of the reasons why English-speaking people must learn French to be fully educated, though French is second only to English in the importance of international communication.
