In recent years,Chinese diplomats in the Embassy of P.R.China in Kazakhstan have made tremendous work on the study of Xian Xinghai’s life and creation. In 2001,Ding Haijia (then the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan) et al published a book titled Xian Xinghai in Kazakhstan (Xingjiang Publishing House). One may find in this book that even Kazakh musicologists had great interest in Xinghai’s music creations, and wrote a series of monographs on the same subject.Back in the 1940’s,Xian Xinghai would never imagine that he could make such great contribution to the friendship between China and Kazakhstan. In 1991,on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Prokofiev’s birthday, the Soviet Composers’Publishing House published a memoir written by Prokofiev’s son.He described their family’s life in Paris in these words:“...On the third floor was the room for the maid and the storage room. The maid was often changed; sometimes some students came for the job.For one while, ourmaid”was a Chinese student who was studying in Paris. He did all kinds of work, such as cleaning the house and shopping.Every time when we were dining,he would serve us wearing his white gloves.Of course, this was not what my parents asked him to do.We had very simple rules in our family, which had no habit of conceit.Maybe this was what he thought he had to do.The reason I mention him is that he was the well-known Chinese composer Xian Xinghai.Xian Xinghai had close ties with the former Soviet Union (today’s Russia and Kazakhstan).Of his 40 years’lifetime, almost 5 years were spent here. This is also a very important period of his creation. After his death, the Soviet Union showed great respect and concern over this Chinese cultural ambassador and great composer. In the 1950’s,a series of memorial articles were published by the Soviet musicians who knew him before. The Soviet Music Publishing House published a special book titield Xian Xinghai (1956).In 1955,the Yellow River Cantata was performed in Moscow on the occasion of Xian Xinghai’s 50th birthday.
