Midnight is an early work by the Canadian poet, Archbridge Lampman (1861-1899). He is one of four “federal poets,” and most of his poetry is portrayal of scenery. Although he loves nature, his health does not allow him to participate too much in outdoor activities. Therefore, in the poem, he often appears as a quiet contemplative observer, just purely describing things without any evaluation. This essay tries to make a tentative analysis of the poem “Midnight” from poet’s selection of words, arrangement of rhymes, arrangement of structures and atmosphere rendering. From this poem, we recognize the awesome aspect of nature: shaggy, unsympathetic and unknown. Because of this, the mysterious sound is still a mystery to us.
