As the saying goes, history will not repeat itself. In recent years, Canada’s Fisheries Department has done its best to avoid the recurrence of the nightmare of the collapse of the cod fishing industry that occurred in 1990. Historical documents provide an accurate account of the growing maritime disputes over the Canadian Cod fishing fisheries, resulting in a total closure of fishing in 1992, with much of the effort made by the Canadian fishing sector later on. The signing of a trade agreement between Canada and the EU will significantly enhance bilateral trade and investment in fisheries, create employment opportunities and further cooperation. Once the agreement enters into force, EU’s import tariffs on 96% of Canada’s aquatic products will be waived and will be fully implemented in seven years
