[French “Today’s Army” No. 207, February 1996] The 1996 budget for nuclear deterrence amounted to 20.451 billion francs, accounting for 21.6% of the total budget for weapons and equipment. This provision represents a 4.3% increase over the declared budget. At the request of the President of the Republic of France, extensive research is being conducted in the area of nuclear deterrence, with the adjustments that have been made somewhat conservative and can be amended in accordance with the decision of the Defense Committee. With regard to the modernization of the maritime strategic equipment, its financial capability has enabled France to consider making adjustments to the construction schedule for the construction of a new generation of missile-launched submarines.
