Background The use of risk calculators is becoming more prevalent for certain diseases and is based on the assumption that applying a risk calculator reduces the risk of disease, allows users to be better informed, and enables them to take action to prevent illness. Objective To investigate the response of patients with type 2 diabetes to cardiovascular risk calculator. The goal is to identify patients’ cognitive and emotional responses to the risk and to see if cardiovascular risk calculators can promote healthy behaviors and / or improve adherence to health care and explore the underlying principles. Design Qualitative research combines the experience of groups and individuals. Type 2 diabetes patients were enrolled as subjects through online advertising, posters at general practice clinics, and advertisements in diabetic populations. Method participants used a cardiovascular risk calculator to make an individualized assessment of cardiovascular risk. The assessment was based on data from the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) and various trial data and systematic reviews. The description of risk information uses frequency, visual display and many other ways. Record and enter data, analyzed by a team of multidisciplinary staff. The results are based on 36 participants. After using cardiovascular risk calculators, participants showed a series of complex cognitive and emotional responses, perhaps explaining that the health behavior changes revealed by the literature were not obvious. Conclusion For people with diabetes, the use of cardiovascular risk calculators under the guidance of health professionals can help them apply risk information generated by cardiovascular risk calculators as an effective resource that motivates and encourages them to adopt healthy behaviors.
