Most of the Brazilian ports are built on a long-term basis with small scale and outdated facilities. Their handling capacity can not meet the needs of the large-scale development of today’s shipping industry and the growing import and export of Brazilian trade. According to the statistics of the Brazilian Ports and Wharf Federation, the total port throughput of Brazil in 2010 was 834 million tons, of which 109 private ports nationwide accounted for more than 70% of the total. The Federation predicts that by 2015 Brazil’s total port throughput will exceed 1 billion t, port expansion is imminent.
