Urbanization and Related Issues At present, more than 270 million urban residents in Asia are young people, accounting for almost 50% of the total urban population in the world. According to the 2005 UN projections, 53.3 million people will live in Asian cities by 2030, and the total urban population in the Asian region is expected to increase from 1.553 billion to 2.663 billion. The proportion of urban residents will also rise from 40% to 55 %. Many young people were born in cities, and some young people migrated from rural areas alone or with their families. East Asia has the highest degree of urbanization, with the lowest in Central and South Asia, with urban residents in these two regions accounting for 41.6% and 29.8% respectively. In the subregion, two thirds of East Asia, nearly half of Central and South Asia and Southeast Asia expect to migrate to cities, with the data varying more widely across countries (Hugo, 2003).
