20世纪二三十年代的中国,社会动荡、民不聊生。在当时的背景下,鲁迅只能用珂勒惠支的木刻《牺牲》来悼念好友柔石,来发泄内心的悲愤。由于当时国民文化素质较低,用珂勒惠支版画是为唤起国民思想觉悟的不二手段,当然也是由于被当时中国社会形势所迫。同时,鲁迅也想用珂勒惠支版画与中国的绘画艺术相融合来指明中国版画的发展方向。这就是鲁迅在中国竭力推荐珂勒惠支版画的原因。
