When most of the state-owned enterprises are in the critical stage of transitional establishment, Sanonda Group Co., Ltd., located in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, has become a hot topic. This state-owned pesticide plant, which ranked 8th in the country’s pesticide industry eight years ago, has been transformed into one of the largest pesticide production and export bases in China. Its four major economic indicators of output, sales, profits, and foreign exchange earned through exports ranked first in the industry for seven consecutive years. By the end of 1998, the company had total assets of 2.4 billion yuan, net assets of 1.5 billion yuan, sales revenue of 1.4 billion yuan, profits and taxes of 130 million yuan, and pesticide production of 240,000 tons. The company’s total assets increased by 10 times, net assets increased by 18 times, main income increased by 7 times, total pesticide production increased by 6 times, and the national market share increased from 3% to 8%. The success of Sanonda allows us to see our state-owned enterprises in a market economy
